Two kingdoms in perpetual conflict... A magical artifact with untold power...
Two decades ago, the mage Delminor brought together the shards of the Red Jade in an effort to bring peace to two kingdoms that were ever at war. Instead, his efforts decimated both armies and scattered the shards across the lands.
Now Dariak, a Hathren mage, seeks the scattered shards of the Red Jade, attempting to unify them with less disastrous results. To begin his quest, he ventures into enemy territory and encounters danger at every turn.
Dariak enlists the help of others on his quest, but they have their own goals and their journeys in Kallisor are no easy task.
Facing feral creatures, mercenaries, and the king himself, it’s all Dariak can do to seek the jades without repeating the colossal failures of past mages.
The shattered shards in a shattered land...
With the fall of the Prisoner’s Tower, Dariak and his companions head west toward his home kingdom of Hathreneir. The group struggles against feral creatures while striving to avoid the king’s soldiers. With each piece of the Red Jade, Dariak’s powers grow, but—as in Pindington—he can’t always control them.
As the group journeys through the opposing kingdoms, each member must confront his or her past. Though they gather allies along the way, the war looms closer and peace seems ever out of reach. Only uniting the jade fragments can save them, or so Dariak believes.
The desert expanse of Hathreneir reaches silently toward the lush fields of Kallisor. Restoring the balance of magic can save the realms, but with the shards in the hands of foes, and two kings locked in an ages-old battle, the Red Jade isn’t the only thing that is shattered.
The ebb and flow of power...
With one jade left to reclaim, the team fractures, further jeopardizing Dariak’s quest for peace. Heading deeper into Hathreneir, he seeks the final shard.
The war between the two kingdoms escalates as troops are stationed at the borders and skirmishes erupt. Time is running out for Dariak to unify the shards and make his power known to the kings.
Pushing through the growing battles, Kitalla sets her personal goals aside to rebuild their team and reclaim the balance that is missing from her life.
Only with the will of the jades can the companions hope to overcome the odds and assemble the Red Jade at last. Delminor’s legacy looms before them all.
A castle destroyed... The jades drained...
With the companions and the jades united, Dariak’s quest should have already ended, but more work remains.
As with Delminor, who assembled the jades two decades earlier, bringing the shards together led only to further devastation.
To complete his quest, Dariak must solve the final complication and unite the Red Jade permanently, without destroying any more of the world around him.
Only with the help of his companions can the talented mage hope to bring peace to the lands of Kallisor and Hathreneir. Only together can they uncover the truth of the Forgotten Tribe.
The Red Jade was just a myth, its shards only whispered about among the mages...
Practitioners of the magic arts pull from the elements available to them, casting complex incantations and deciphering intricate runes, making magic inaccessible except to the most dedicated learners.
Wishing to unlock the secrets of magic for all mages, Delminor pursues knowledge of the elements and the secrets of the Red Jade. His efforts, however, are hindered by the ever-raging war between Hathreneir and Kallisor.
The discovery of one mystical shard lights a thirst in Delminor to hunt any others in existence, but at a cost. Not all agree with his goal of sharing knowledge across the lands, and not all would use his powers for good.
Delminor's trials begin before the War of the Colossus and continue on for decades to come. Only perseverance can help him now.
Delminor's Trials is a stand-alone prequel to the events in Red Jade books 1-4.
A legacy behind him... A destiny ahead...
Dariak is overshadowed by the legacy of his father, a man known to all mages, but a man he never knew. Ever compared to his father’s renown, Dariak yearns to make a name for himself.
When he meets Kesh and explores magic with him, the spark between them ignites a rivalry with an old friend. When things go awry, Kesh is summoned home and Dariak ventures off to find his place in the world and a way to return to Kesh.
He soon learns that every action has consequences and leaving the confines of his father's shadow causes him to cast shadows of his own.
Dariak's Shadow is a stand-alone prequel to the events in Red Jade books 1-4.
A new generation... New travails...
Perrios must protect the Red Jade as he faces the prospect of ruling the kingdoms of Kallisor and Hathreneir. But though the Red Jade has been safe for twenty-five years, its protections have waned. Perrios must face his errors and seek a new path.
Kannik, a lightning and water mage and close friend to Perrios, joins the young heir on his quest to secure the safety of the magical relic. Together, the two must battle countless monsters, make new friends, and face the realities of life around them.
Only in working together can the realm be saved. But can their friendship withstand the perils along the way?
The art of magic... The magic of art...
Over the course of the creation of the Red Jade world, art has played a major role. It all started with cover art from Fyodor Ananiev, who illustrated the first four book covers of the series. He also designed the Red Jade symbol that unites the books.
Giovanni Panarello stepped in next for the other Red Jade covers, bringing his expertise and something I did not expect: character sketches. With the two characters on the front cover of Delminor's Trials, Giovanni provided full-body sketches of the characters. This inspired me to ask for more drawings of the rest of my characters. From a small set to nearly the whole list, Giovanni crafted each sketch with utmost detail and professionalism.
The kingdoms of Kallisor and Hathreneir host many towns and other settlements. To keep track of these, maps were needed and that's where Veronika Wunderer came in, crafting maps from my rough sketches.
And of course, the team battles beasts throughout their journey. I enlisted the help of Olha Holonko to draw these monsters. I chose a 16-bit style to give a video game feel.
